Trade RPL

Turn the experience you already have into a qualification pathway

If you've spent years on the tools, supervising work or running construction projects, you may already have skills that align with the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification.

Recognition of Prior Learning allows relevant existing skills and knowledge to be formally assessed. BCQ helps experienced tradespeople understand the process and prepare evidence for assessment by All Trades and Compliance (RTO 32398).

What is Recognition of Prior Learning?

RPL is a formal assessment process. It considers relevant prior learning gained through work, previous training and experience against the requirements of a qualification.

It is not an automatic qualification and it does not guarantee that every unit will be granted through RPL.

Carpentry RPL

Experienced carpenters may be able to have existing skills and work experience assessed against the requirements of a nationally recognised carpentry qualification. This can be particularly relevant for people who have worked in the trade for years but do not hold the formal qualification that reflects their capability.

Evidence can include employment history, completed projects, photographs, plans, site documentation, previous training, third-party verification and practical or competency evidence where required.

Other construction trade RPL pathways

BCQ can assist with a range of construction trade qualification pathways, subject to the current scope of the RTO and the candidate's experience. Examples can include:

What evidence might you need?

Resume or detailed work history
Previous qualifications or Statements of Attainment
Project photographs or video evidence
Plans, job documentation, site records or other workplace evidence
Third-party or referee verification
Competency conversations, practical evidence or further assessment where required

Not every candidate needs every type of evidence listed above.

What happens if there are gaps?

RPL is evidence-based. If the evidence does not demonstrate all requirements of the qualification, the RTO can identify additional evidence, assessment or learning that is required. BCQ helps you understand what is being requested and supports you through the evidence process.

RPL and licensing

A qualification obtained through RPL is still subject to the same qualification and assessment requirements. Where a qualification forms part of a licensing pathway, the relevant licensing authority separately determines whether its licensing requirements have been met.
